Every year on August 23, Ukraine celebrates an important day – Flag Day. The blue-yellow flag represents our national identity and the struggle for independence. What is its history?
Flag Day: Historical Context
The combination of blue and yellow colors became national symbols of Ukraine during the European revolutions of the 19th century. However, their use dates back even further, as these colors appear in the coats of arms of cities from the times of Kievan Rus. Cossacks also depicted yellow images on a blue background on their banners.
Officially, the blue-yellow flag was recognized as a state symbol in 1918, and by 1991, after the declaration of independence, it became a symbol of Ukrainian statehood. On January 28, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada officially adopted it as the State Flag of Ukraine.
The idea of celebrating Flag Day emerged 20 years ago and was officially established by President Leonid Kuchma's decree in 2004. The date was chosen intentionally, as on August 23, 1991, the blue-yellow flag was first brought into the Verkhovna Rada, marking a significant event on the path to independence.
Symbolism of the National Flag

Notably, Prince Volodymyr the Great used a coat of arms featuring a golden trident on a blue background. Later, in the 13th century, the Galician princes also used the blue-yellow palette.
The official recognition of the blue-yellow flag occurred during the declaration of the Ukrainian People's Republic. It was first raised at the city hall in Stryi on March 14, 1990, and in Kyiv on July 24, 1990.
