Microsoft has announced the termination of the password storage feature in its Authenticator app. Starting June 2025, users will no longer be able to add or import new passwords. From July, the autofill password feature via Authenticator will be unavailable, and by August, all stored passwords will be deleted. Additionally, all payment information saved in the Authenticator app will also be removed.

However, passkeys will remain accessible to users, allowing them to securely log into services without the need to remember complex passwords.

For those who wish to stay within the Microsoft ecosystem, saved passwords can be viewed and utilized through the Microsoft Edge browser, which features its own password manager with autofill capabilities. Users who do not use Edge are advised to consider alternative password managers, such as 1Password, LastPass, Bitwarden, or others compatible with various platforms.

This change is part of Microsoft's strategy to enhance security and transition to modern authentication methods that minimize risks associated with password theft. Passkeys supported in Authenticator are deemed more secure and user-friendly.

Users are encouraged to export their passwords from Microsoft Authenticator to another manager in advance to avoid losing access to important accounts after August 2025.
