In Odesa, another street has been renamed. Pestel Street in the Khadyzhibey District is now named after Simon Litman — one of the founders of global marketing education. Born in Odesa in 1873, he became the first marketing lecturer in the United States. This was announced by the Odesa City Council.
Why the renaming
The Pestel Street in Odesa has been renamed to Simon Litman Street. This change honors the memory of the distinguished economist and one of the early theorists of marketing worldwide. Simon Litman, who studied at the Odesa Commercial School, later became the first marketing instructor in American higher education after emigrating to the United States.
In 1911, he published "Trade and Commerce" — one of the first marketing textbooks globally. Litman taught at California and Illinois universities, and his lectures laid the groundwork for modern business education programs in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Japan. He was the first to define marketing as a distinct science, focusing not just on sales but on understanding people's needs, communication, and trust. His approach became the foundation for what is now known as customer-oriented business.
