March 21 is recognized globally as World Down Syndrome Day.

In Odessa, there are over 150 individuals living with Down syndrome.  To raise public awareness and combat stereotypes, a photo exhibition featuring the lives of families in Odessa with members who have this genetic condition has been organized at the Center for Integrated Social Services.

Attendees were welcomed by Elena Kytainska, the director of the Department of Labor and Social Policy of the Odessa City Council, who wished everyone peace, harmony, and patience.

Lidia Ostrogladova, a mother of two children with Down syndrome, expressed her gratitude for the attention and support in addressing issues faced by individuals with disabilities.

Representatives from community organizations such as “Future Guarantee,” “Special Children,” and “Healthy Society” also participated in the event.

At the end of the meeting, representatives from the Department of Labor and Social Policy presented special gifts to the guests.

Additionally, employees from the district social protection management in Odessa joined the worldwide flash mob “Colorful Socks.” In a show of support for individuals with Down syndrome, they attached an odd number of colorful socks to their outerwear, symbolizing the extra chromosome.
