Last week, Odesa organized an event focused on the prevention and early detection of diabetes for both adults and children.

This initiative was supported by the Department of Health of the Odesa City Council and the Odesa City Health Center.

As part of the event, doctors offered free blood glucose tests, blood pressure measurements, height and weight checks, and BMI calculations along with consultations. If necessary, they also created electronic referrals for additional laboratory tests and specialist consultations.

On this day, doctors also engaged with visitors to discuss diabetes prevention and early detection, risk factors for type II diabetes, healthy lifestyle habits, nutritious eating, and physical activity.

In total, 3130 residents of Odesa underwent preventive examinations, including 2280 adults and 850 children.

Among the adults, 296 cases of high blood pressure and 161 cases of elevated blood glucose were identified for the first time. Additionally, 467 patients were found to have a high BMI. Furthermore, 227 individuals were referred for additional laboratory tests.

In children, 10 cases of elevated blood pressure and 13 cases of high blood glucose were detected during screenings. 91 children had a BMI above normal. Also, 76 children were referred for laboratory cholesterol level testing.

Overall, doctors provided 2986 consultations during the event, including 706 consultations for children.

Diabetes is a chronic endocrine disorder characterized by persistent high blood glucose levels and metabolic dysfunction. It can lead to serious complications, including heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage, and vision impairment.

Symptoms of diabetes include thirst, constant hunger, frequent urination, rapid weight loss or gain, fatigue, and vision problems.

Type 1 diabetes is insulin-dependent, develops quickly, usually in young people, with risks mainly related to genetics.

Type 2 diabetes is associated with insulin resistance, develops gradually, and may remain asymptomatic for a long time. Many risk factors are lifestyle-related, making it preventable.

Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include obesity, sedentary lifestyle, stress, pancreatic diseases, hypertension, and age.

Prevention of type 2 diabetes:

  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Engage in regular physical activity.
  • Follow a healthy diet.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Regularly monitor blood sugar levels.
