SpaceX has explained that a recent significant outage affecting Starlink was caused by a software update. According to the company, ground computing clusters experienced overload during the process, leading to failures in essential services. This is reported by PCMag.
The disruptions began on July 24 around 10 PM Kyiv time and impacted users globally, including Ukrainian military personnel. During peak hours, Starlink serves over 6 million customers worldwide. The majority managed to regain access to the network within 2.5 hours; however, some subscribers reported connectivity issues extending into the following day. This was the longest outage in Starlink's history since the service's launch.
After service restoration, some users noticed improvements in connection speeds—reaching 250 Mbps and above, whereas previous averages were around 110–150 Mbps. This raised speculation that the update aimed to enhance network performance.
Meanwhile, other users continue to report ongoing issues with speed and stability. The Starlink support page currently advises users to restart their equipment, including devices from third-party manufacturers.
