Google has launched an innovative tool called Guided Learning in its Gemini chatbot, aimed at providing step-by-step learning for students. This feature competes with the newly released ChatGPT Study mode by OpenAI, as reported by Fast Company.

Unlike traditional chatbots that offer instant answers, Guided Learning breaks down complex queries into simpler components for deeper material comprehension. Instead of providing direct answers, the system guides users towards understanding through a series of thoughtfully crafted questions. This tool addresses concerns within the education sector about chatbots undermining learning processes by offering quick answers without fostering genuine understanding.

Students can reach out to the AI with questions at any time. In response, Guided Learning typically provides contextual hints that encourage independent searching for answers, often rephrasing the query instead of solving it outright. If a student strays off-topic, the AI acknowledges their interests but gently steers them back to the main subject.

While most responses from Guided Learning are text-based, some queries can generate visual illustrations and suggest relevant YouTube videos from educational experts. Students can upload notes or course outlines, allowing the tool to tailor interactions based on the material being studied.

The launch of Guided Learning is part of Google’s $1 billion educational initiative over three years aimed at AI in education. College students aged 18 and over in the USA, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil will receive free 12-month access to the Google AI Pro plan.

The Google AI for Education Accelerator program will provide free AI training, Google Career certificates, and advanced AI tools to college students nationwide. Over 100 universities representing millions of students have already enrolled in the program.
