The Odessa City Council has approved significant changes to the «Equality» program, which will now be known as «Barrier-Free Odessa».

Key changes include plans to open a beach for individuals with disabilities at the 11th station of the Great Fountain this year.

Mayor Gennady Trukhanov stated that the estimated cost for capital works is 21.3 million UAH. Funds were allocated on February 5 during a city council session for the development of project documentation that will provide a more accurate figure.

The last renovation of the beach took place in 2019. The aggressive marine environment necessitates repairs to the ramp, stairs leading to the beach, and the installation of new decking. Additionally, the medical station and restroom will be renovated, along with upgrades to the sewage system.

«Our resort city is currently the only one that provides conditions for marine rehabilitation for mobility-impaired groups, including our veterans who have lost limbs in war and children with disabilities,» said Gennady Trukhanov.

The mayor also reminded that there are plans to implement an inclusive sports playground project at the «Dolphin» beach in time for the new health season. This decision has been approved by the Executive Committee.

Odessa's municipal authorities also aim to create a robust rehabilitation base in Southern Ukraine. The program includes plans to purchase equipment worth over 20 million UAH for rehabilitation departments in hospitals, along with 1.2 million UAH for the establishment of inclusive wards in other healthcare facilities in the city.

Another program point suggests expanding the capabilities of the «Social Taxi» service for transporting individuals with mobility impairments.
