Each autumn and spring, cases of burning dry leaves, grass, and branches are reported in cities.

The city hall of Odesa reiterates that burning dry leaves and grass in Ukraine is strictly prohibited and is punishable by administrative fines, and in some cases, criminal liability. This practice harms health, the environment, and poses a threat to life.

It is also forbidden to dispose of leaves and cut branches into garbage containers or leave them nearby.

There is a common myth that burning can improve crop yield. However, this is not true.
Firstly, the microflora essential for biological processes is destroyed. The recovery of fertile soil under these circumstances can take 5-6 years.

Secondly, the burning process pollutes the air with harmful substances that affect the respiratory system.

Thirdly, burning grass does NOT warm the soil, does NOT enrich it with ash, and does NOT promote the growth of new grass.

Moreover, a small fire can escalate into a large-scale blaze, causing destruction and increasing the workload for emergency services.

It is better to compost leaves; this is not only a civilized way to handle organic waste but also an economical method to obtain excellent fertilizer.
