Police have successfully identified a man involved in the illegal appropriation of a vehicle in the Podilskyi district. The suspect stole the car simply because he did not want to walk home. He has been charged and a preventive measure has been taken. He faces imprisonment and property confiscation.
According to law enforcement, the incident occurred in one of the villages of the Zelenohirska community. A local resident reported that an unknown individual stole his VAZ car from his yard during the night.
"The vehicle was discovered by police on the outskirts of the village, close to the crime scene, and through initial investigative actions that same day, the perpetrator was promptly identified and arrested at his residence. He turned out to be a 26-year-old man from the Baltska community, previously convicted of property crimes with an unexpunged criminal record", - stated the police.
The arrested individual explained that upon seeing an unlocked vehicle in someone else's yard, he decided to drive it home. The car was unlocked, and he started the engine by connecting the ignition wires. However, he did not manage to get far as the vehicle broke down, and leaving it on the outskirts of the village, he fled the scene.
"We detained the suspect in accordance with procedural rules. We have collected enough evidence and charged him with committing a criminal offense under Part 2 of Article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to the repeated illegal appropriation of a vehicle. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to eight years with or without property confiscation. At our request, the court has chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention. We also ordered a commodity examination to establish the value of the car and the damages incurred by the victim", - reported Olegh Sytnyk, head of Police Department No. 1 of Podilskyi RUP.
