The Odesa Academic Ukrainian Musical and Dramatic Theater named after V. Vasylko is celebrating its centenary. The theater shared this significant occasion through its social media.

Founded on November 7, 1925, in Odesa, this theater has become a symbol of Ukrainian culture in our city. Over the past century, it has gone through various stages: from creative innovations in the 1920s to the hardships of the 1930s, wartime evacuation, and post-war revival, as well as challenges in independence.

Initially led by Mark Tereshchenko, the theater was later headed by Vasyl Vasylko in its second season, a director whose contributions to global theatrical history are undeniable. His innovative ideas were supported by diverse acting troupes for decades.

In its first three years, the theater presented 34 premieres, including “Viy”, “The Two Hares”, “Haydamaky”, and “Marusya Bohuslavka”. By the 1930s, it had become a true center of theatrical life, showcasing the best actors and directors of the time.

During World War II, the theater was evacuated but returned in 1944 with the liberation of Odesa. Ukrainian language once again resonated under the ruined chandeliers, and the post-war period brought back classics like “Natalka Poltavka”, “Stolen Happiness”, and “Forest Song” to the stage.

In the 1990s, despite various challenges, the theater managed to preserve the Ukrainian language on its stage and remained a space for creative freedom. Under the leadership of Yuliya Pyvovarova, the theater skillfully blends classic works with modern dramaturgy, presenting texts by Olha Kobylianska, Shakespeare, Hotskyi, and Vorozhbyt.

The modern chapter of the theater includes premieres in shelters, international co-productions, jazz in the Greek hall, and young talents alongside national artists.

The Vasylko Theater represents light even in darkness.
About the Ukrainian language that echoes in a full hall.
About beauty, truth, and strength that sustain us in tough times.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to these 100 years.
Inspiration to those who will create the next ones.
Happy anniversary, our beloved Odesa theater!
May the stage always shine, and the hall be packed!

The artists also invite their admirers to celebrate the anniversary together: on November 8th for the performance “Hello, Monster!” and on November 9th for “Neapolitan Passions”.
