On March 1, 2025, the Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art hosted a celebration exhibition titled “The Art of Gennady Harmyder”.
Gennady Harmyder was a notable Ukrainian artist known for his graphic work and illustrations. His artistic journey spanned multiple mediums, with a strong focus on urban landscapes. His body of work includes still lifes and portraits of both real and fictional characters. He illustrated approximately 200 books and created numerous bookplates.
“We take pride in the legacy of Gennady Harmyder, who captured the essence of Odessa in his art,” stated Ivan Liptyuga, director of the Department of International Cooperation at the Odessa City Council.
During the exhibition opening, artists, journalists, and art critics shared insights about Harmyder's life and work.
Over 100 pieces created during his 50-year career were displayed at the exhibition.
This includes engravings from beloved series focusing on Odessa, such as “Odessa in the Early 19th Century” and “Theater and City”.
A unique piece on display is an etching of the historical center of Odessa, consisting of nine parts, with only a few copies in existence.
The series “My Ukraine” is marked by warmth and lyrical landscapes showcasing the beauty of various Ukrainian regions, while “10 Days on a Trimaran” conveys the thrilling dialogue between man and the sea.
Harmyder's paintings are of considerable interest, though rarely exhibited. The last significant showcase was in 2005.
This year, on February 21, Gennady Harmyder would have celebrated his 80th birthday. He left behind a tremendous artistic legacy, with works housed in 27 museums across Ukraine.
The Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art is open daily except Wednesdays, from 12:00 to 17:00.
