Odesa celebrates 60 years of friendship with Yokohama.
This week, Odesa is hosting events dedicated to Japanese culture to mark the anniversary of its partnership with Yokohama.
Today, the Central City Library named after I.Ya. Franko became a venue where visitors dove into the enchanting world of Japanese culture.
Creative children's groups and young artists from Odesa showcased Japan's rich traditions and unique identity.
The Ambassador of Japan to Ukraine, Mr. Masashi Nakagome, in his video message, reaffirmed Japan's unwavering support for Ukraine and highlighted the significance of cultural collaboration for strengthening bonds between our nations.
The Yokohama City Hall also participated in the celebration through a video presentation, allowing guests to learn more about our sister city.
“Odesa has the honor and joy of calling Japan a friend. Exactly 60 years ago, we became sister cities with Yokohama. Our relationship exemplifies stable international friendship and cultural exchange, especially significant during the last three years of war in Ukraine,” said Ivan Liptuga, Director of the Department of International Cooperation, Culture, and Marketing.
Yokohama provides support on many levels: Odesa receives vital humanitarian assistance and organizes exchanges for youth in arts and sports. Together, we are restoring a kindergarten damaged by enemy attacks, developing cogeneration technologies, and forming a post-war recovery plan for the city.
This is a story of true friendship that transcends borders, language barriers, and cultural differences.
The best way for the people of Odesa to express their gratitude is to embrace this beautiful culture, honor our partnership, and remember its history.
