In the city of Odessa, an innovative vaccination program for children against the human papillomavirus (HPV) is being actively implemented funded by the municipal budget. This vaccination plays a crucial role in preventing cancer and reproductive health issues in adulthood.

The HPV vaccine is most effective for children aged 9 to 14, before they become sexually active. As noted by Levon Nikogosyan, the director of the Odessa City Health Department, during a conference, 1590 children have already been vaccinated since October 2023, with 858 completing the full vaccination course. An additional 1500 vaccinations are planned by the end of the year.

Odessa is the only city in Ukraine that offers free HPV vaccinations to both girls and boys.

“Vaccination is one of humanity's most significant achievements, saving countless lives. I urge all parents to take their children's health seriously and to ensure they receive timely vaccinations,” emphasized Levon Nikogosyan.

A vaccination school was held on November 6, 2024, supported by the Odessa Health Department and the Odessa Region Family Medicine Association. Medical professionals from various specialties participated in the event.

Experts highlighted the importance of timely vaccinations to prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases and maintain a favorable health situation in Odessa and throughout Ukraine.

Additionally, discussions were held regarding extra vaccinations that are recommended but not included in the National Vaccination Calendar, such as pneumococcal vaccination. Emphasis was placed on effective communication between healthcare providers and parents, along with addressing common questions about vaccinations.
