Last year, medical facilities in Odessa performed 12,390 gastroscopic examinations, during which 240 cases of suspected gastrointestinal cancers were identified.
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, commonly known as gastroscopy, involves a thorough examination of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum using a specialized endoscope. This method enables the early detection of gastritis, ulcers, and both benign and malignant tumors.
Doctors recommend that individuals over the age of 50 undergo gastroscopy even in the absence of symptoms. For those under 50, if a doctor deems the examination necessary, a referral is required to schedule an appointment at a medical facility contracted with the National Health Service of Ukraine for "Esophagogastroduodenoscopy".
This service is provided in outpatient settings. If gastroscopy is needed during inpatient treatment, it is also performed free of charge upon a doctor's referral.
Modern video gastroscopes have been purchased for medical facilities in Odessa using city budget funds. A referral from a family or attending physician is necessary for free examination.
