The Department of Health of Odesa City Council has initiated an innovative project titled «Healthy City: Weight Control».

The main aim of the project is to reduce the prevalence of obesity among children and adults and to prevent related diseases while enhancing life quality.

«Excess weight is a global issue that must be addressed. Only a small fraction of Ukrainians maintain a healthy weight. Weight management and awareness of nutrition are essential for our health, which we must promote», emphasized Levon Nikogosyan, the Department Director.

The project plans to train over 350 family doctors and nurses, equipping them with knowledge about obesity, its prevention, and treatment.

Leading experts from Odesa National Medical University and the Family Medicine Association will be involved in the training.

The seminars will cover various topics, including dietary advice for adults and children, monitoring habits, physical activities, and sleep patterns. Screening for weight-related problems and associated diseases will also be implemented.

The first training session commenced on March 4, 2025, at the Primary Health Care Center. A group of 30 specialists is receiving education on addressing obesity and conducting motivational talks.

«Obesity is a serious condition that can lead to multiple complications. Individuals often do not realize they are developing diabetes until significant symptoms appear. Therefore, understanding the risks is crucial», pointed out Valentina Velichko, director of the Children's Medical Center.

Doctors offer simple tips for improving health:

1. Drink plain water, avoiding sugary drinks between meals.

2. Aim to consume at least half a kilogram of fruits and vegetables daily for better digestion.

3. Dedicate one hour each day to physical activity — this could be walking, exercising, or other sports.
