On Sunday, July 13, the final of the 2025 Club World Cup took place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, USA.
The championship match featured two European teams: Chelsea and PSG.
Many did not expect to see Chelsea reach this stage, while PSG, as the reigning Champions League winner, was anticipated. However, the match result was surprising – the first half determined the victor.
The French team started sluggishly, which Chelsea capitalized on under Enzo Maresca's management. In the 22nd minute, PSG's defense failed to clear a shot from Malo Gusto, allowing Cole Palmer to find the ball and strike from distance, beating Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Eight minutes later, Palmer replicated his success, scoring again – 2:0 in favor of Chelsea.
Even after conceding two goals, Luis Enrique's squad did not wake up, trailing 0:3 at halftime.
Cole Palmer also contributed with an assist, setting up Joao Pedro, who confidently lobbed the ball over Donnarumma.
Only after halftime did PSG, spurred by Luis Enrique's shouts, start playing more aggressively, but Robert Sanchez made several outstanding saves.
As time passed, PSG's chances dwindled. Moreover, the score could have been higher if not for Donnarumma, who stopped two shots from Liam Delap.
PSG's last hopes were dashed when Joao Neves lost his cool, tugging at Marc Cucurella's hair, which led to a confrontation. After reviewing the play, referee Alireza Faghani issued a straight red card to the Portuguese player.
In the end, the referee's final whistle confirmed Chelsea's resounding 3:0 victory, marking a historic achievement for the club in the tournament's new format.
