The mobile operator "Kyivstar" has successfully conducted tests of its SIM card with the Starlink satellite network, marking a significant step towards the integration of Direct to Cell technology in Ukraine. This was reported by the company’s press service.
The testing took place in a partner laboratory in the USA. During the experiment, the "Kyivstar" SIM card successfully synchronized with the Starlink network, and the system correctly identified the subscriber and processed signals. This demonstrates the technical readiness for integrating satellite communication.
"Kyivstar" is the first company in Europe to sign an agreement with Starlink for the launch of Direct to Cell, due to the strategic approach and technological readiness of our team. We have been monitoring the development of this technology since 2021. In times of war, when communication is critically important, the company decided to invest in Direct to Cell," — said Ilya Polishakov, Director of New Business Development at "Kyivstar"
The Direct to Cell technology allows for mobile coverage directly from satellites to standard smartphones, without the need for special equipment. In the future, it will complement Kyivstar's ground infrastructure and enable communication even during a complete blackout or in hard-to-reach areas like mountains or rural locations.
The next phase will involve field testing of Direct to Cell services in selected locations in Ukraine, which "Kyivstar" plans to begin in the summer of 2025. In the initial testing phase, "Kyivstar" specialists will be able to verify text message exchanges.
It is worth noting that the Direct to Cell service will be available to all "Kyivstar" subscribers who have a smartphone and a 4G-compatible SIM card. The company emphasizes that satellite communication will not replace the ground network but will play a key role in emergency situations.
As a reminder, "Kyivstar" and Starlink signed an agreement on the use of satellite communication in Ukraine in December 2024. In March 2025, the NKEC provided "Kyivstar" with the code "707" for satellite mobile communication.
