The recently launched VR KOLO project at the "Media Center Ukraine" integrates five museums from various regions into a single virtual space. Visitors can now swiftly travel between Chernihiv, Khortytsia, Okhtyrka, Pryluky, and Dubno simply by wearing a VR headset.
According to the press release, VR KOLO is a future-oriented infrastructure connecting culture, education, and innovation. The project is implemented with support from the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation in partnership with Forward Inc. and the "Museum Development Fund" charity.
In the context of ongoing war, which has led to the loss of countless cultural monuments, VR KOLO offers a way to preserve and restore cultural presence through the digitization of lost artifacts.
"VR KOLO is a means to preserve and rejuvenate heritage, turning museums into active spaces rather than just places for observation. We are creating sustainable infrastructures that will be updated daily with new exhibitions. This represents a new museum culture where heritage becomes alive and accessible to everyone," emphasized Anton Shinkaruk, head of the "Center for Digital History" NGO.
Currently, five institutions are connected to VR KOLO: the National Architectural and Historical Reserve "Chernihiv Ancient", the National Reserve "Khortytsia", the Okhtyrka Local History Museum, the Pryluky Local History Museum, and the State Historical and Cultural Reserve of Dubno.
Over 120 digital exhibits are already showcased, each with its own story, ranging from ancient artifacts to items damaged during combat. The unique aspect of the VR tour allows every valuable artifact to be examined closely, enlarged, and even held in one's hands.
The VR KOLO team has also announced plans for network expansion and openness to collaborations with museums, local communities, educational institutions, and donors. Participants will receive technical audits, training, and support for launching VR zones in their cities upon request.
