Google is developing two new models of smart glasses that are scheduled to be released in 2026. This was disclosed by the company on their official blog.
The first model will function as a "screenless assistant" and will be equipped with microphones, speakers, and cameras to interact with Google Gemini. These glasses will allow users to take photos, ask questions about objects nearby, and receive useful hints in real-time.
The second model will include the same AI functionalities but will add a display in the lens. Users will be able to see step-by-step navigation, subtitles for live translations, or other important information right in front of their eyes. In both cases, the glasses will work in tandem with a smartphone that will handle the main data processing. The new models will be built on Android XR, Google's new platform for augmented reality devices.
Google is collaborating with Samsung on the hardware component, while Warby Parker and Gentle Monster are designing the glasses, known for their stylish and lightweight eyewear. The company emphasizes that the new models will be comfortable for everyday use.
These products from Google are expected to compete with the Meta Ray-Ban lineup, which already has models featuring AI support and built-in displays. Additionally, rumors suggest that Apple is also preparing its own smart glasses with AI capabilities, which may debut in 2026.
