From October 24 to November 6, gas supply to the Unknown Sailor Memorial, known as «Eternal Flame», will be temporarily suspended in Odesa. This is due to scheduled technical and maintenance work at this significant city landmark.
The city council has reported that informational signs detailing the work schedule have been installed near the memorial. The work will last for nearly two weeks until November 6 inclusive.
What you should know about the memorial complex «Monument to the Unknown Sailor»
The memorial complex «Monument to the Unknown Sailor» is located in the Taras Shevchenko Central Park of Culture and Recreation on Glory Alley. It was inaugurated on May 9, 1960, in honor of Soviet sailors who died during the defense and liberation of Odesa in World War II.
The obelisk, 21 meters tall, is made of red granite, designed by sculptor M. I. Naruzetsky and architects P. V. Tomilin and G. V. Topuz. At the base of the obelisk burns the Eternal Flame, symbolizing memory and respect for heroes. Glory Alley features both individual and mass graves of Soviet Union Hero pilots, marines, submariners, and border guards. Annual commemorative events are held here for the Day of Memory and Reconciliation, the Day of Odesa's Liberation, and other significant dates.
