The Mayor of Odesa, Hennadiy Trukhanov, met with a group of Italian parliamentarians led by Deputy Chamber President Giorgio Mulè. The Italian Ambassador to Ukraine, Carlo Formosa, was also present.
During the dialogue, it was highlighted that Italy is supporting Odesa's recovery, and the parliamentarians came to personally explore the city, its landmarks, and assess the extent of the destruction to determine specific recovery needs. This will enable them to better understand the resources and support required for effective reconstruction.
The parties also discussed promising areas for investment, particularly in the cultural sector. The Italians emphasized the principle that history cannot be erased, regardless of its complexities.
«History evolves, and we must mature alongside it, accepting all its phases. In Italy, many operas were created during fascism, and buildings were constructed. However, this does not justify ignoring them or demolishing them. Art belongs to the world!» - stated Mr. Mulè.
The Italian deputies expressed solidarity with the mayor and the people of Odesa regarding the preservation of heritage, which has contributed to Odesa's status as a UNESCO literary city.
