This weekend, Odessa became the center of a major national sporting event — the National Championship of Ukraine in marine sports, featuring rowing on yachts for both men and women.
The event attracted a record 32 teams from various regions, including veterans and active military personnel. Notably, this championship saw the participation of two teams of children with developmental challenges for the first time.
Odessa's mayor, Gennadiy Trukhanov, opened the championship with a heartfelt speech, emphasizing the significance of the event.
«This is not just a competition. It is a testament to the indomitable spirit. You have already won — through pain and loss. Today, with your smiles, you show everyone that life goes on,» he addressed the veterans.
The mayor added that Odessa is like a caring mother, welcoming everyone for rehabilitation and relaxation.
Gennadiy Trukhanov also announced the participation of the Odessa veterans' team in the legendary Venetian regatta, which has been held for over 700 years, stating that the boat with the Ukrainian flag will symbolize our country's resilience on the international stage.
Dmitry Stepnov, head of the Ukrainian Marine Sports Federation, expressed his admiration for the organization and importance of the championship:
«This is not just about rehabilitating veterans — it is about rehabilitating our society. Veterans serve as examples for the youth, and we already have the first coaches among them. What is happening in Odessa is a dream come true,» he noted.
During the event, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov and Vitaliy Holodko, head of the Odessa branch of the federation, for their significant contributions to the development of adaptive rowing among military personnel.
The championship was organized with the support of the NGO «Barrier-Free».
