OpenAI has ambitious goals for developing a "super assistant powered by artificial intelligence that deeply understands you and serves as your gateway to the internet". This information emerged from a document related to the U.S. Justice Department's case against Google regarding antitrust violations.
Despite significant sections of the document being redacted, it still sheds light on some of OpenAI's aspirations. Specifically, it reveals the developers' intent to rethink how we interact with the internet by creating a new AI interface.
The super assistant is described in the document as an "intelligent entity with T-shaped skills". Potentially, this agent will be personalized for each user and accessible anywhere ChatGPT is available. The "T-shaped form" reflects its deep knowledge and broad skill set designed for handling "exhausting daily tasks".
According to OpenAI, this super assistant will be capable of performing a wide range of tasks: answering questions, searching for housing, maintaining contact with lawyers, scheduling gym sessions, planning vacations, buying gifts, managing calendars, keeping to-do lists, sending emails, and much more.
The assistant is planned for rollout in the first half of 2025, but this is the first mention of such a tool. OpenAI has yet to announce any new products or similar agents, and with the first half of the year coming to an end, the company may need to push back the release date.
Additionally, the document mentions a "bigger play" that could bring ChatGPT into the realm of search engines, browsers, and even operating systems. However, the specific nature of this product remains unclear, as the key term in that paragraph was redacted.
"Then there’s the bigger play: creating the super assistant, and then [REDACTED]. Now we’re dealing with search engines, browsers, even interactions with real people. This isn’t a direct confrontation. It’s about tackling an increasing number of use cases and gradually engaging users. That’s why we don’t label our product a search engine, browser, or OS – it’s simply ChatGPT", the document states.
