In just one month, on August 25, 2025, Google will officially shut down the goo.gl short link service. The company first announced this plan back in July 2024. After the closure, users attempting to access a short link will encounter a 404 / Not Found error.

For a year, Google has been warning users through an intermediary page that short links will soon be disabled. If you visit goo.gl directly, you will see a support page where the company explains its decision.

In 2019, Google ceased support for the URL Shortener tool, but the previously generated links remained operational until 2024, when the company announced their impending shutdown, citing that over 99% of these links were no longer in use.

This decision is justified by the significant changes in how people discover content online, as well as the emergence of numerous new popular URL shortening services.
