5G technology in Ukraine is projected to cover certain areas by 2030. This was stated by Stanislav Prybytko, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation, in an interview with Forbes. However, the full rollout of the technology is postponed until the end of martial law, although testing is already planned in three cities – Lviv, Kharkiv, and Borodyanka.
Prybytko noted that nearly 22% of all smartphones in Ukraine, equating to 9.4 million devices, support 5G technology. He added that the launch of the fifth generation of mobile networks was intended for 2022, but plans were shifted due to the full-scale invasion.
Regarding the chosen regions for testing, Prybytko highlighted that Kharkiv was the president's idea, while Borodyanka symbolizes Ukraine's reconstruction after significant post-war devastation.
"Kharkiv is the president's idea. Testing in Kharkiv demonstrates that despite constant shelling, the city is developing. Borodyanka is a symbol of Ukraine's recovery after significant post-war destruction. Technologies for the 'Smart City' are being implemented there, and new mobile technology is needed," Prybytko stated.
