Google has announced the rollout of a groundbreaking feature called AI Inbox in Gmail, which utilizes the Gemini model to analyze emails and generate summaries of key topics and tasks. These new capabilities signify Gmail's transition into what is referred to as the "Gemini Era".
AI Inbox leverages the Gemini model to process the emails in your inbox, automatically creating a list of important actions and topics. The system identifies tasks based on the context of messages and offers quick access to emails that need attention. Each recommendation links directly to a specific email, allowing users to review the content and context.
Google emphasizes that these new tools aim to reduce email overload and simplify daily email management. AI Inbox complements existing Gemini features in Gmail, including automatic summaries of lengthy email threads and assistance in drafting emails.
The company assures that the AI functionalities in Gmail are designed with privacy considerations in mind. Data from users' inboxes is not used to train the underlying AI models, and users can disable AI tools in the settings. However, Google warns that AI systems may make errors, advising users to verify suggested actions.
Alongside the launch of AI Inbox, Google has made several Gemini-based AI features available to all Gmail users, which were previously exclusive to paid Workspace plans and individual subscriptions. This includes the Help Me Write tool that allows users to create or edit emails based on text prompts, as well as AI Overviews for email threads that automatically generate concise summaries of lengthy conversations without the need to scroll through the entire message history.
Additionally, Gemini can now assist with searching for information in the inbox, responding to queries like "what is this email about" or "what needs to be done", and summarizing individual messages without manual command initiation. All these features are seamlessly integrated into the Gmail interface and operate in the background.
However, advanced tools like stylistic text editing, deep AI search across the inbox, and creating thematic summaries from multiple emails remain available only to subscribers of Google Pro and Ultra plans.
AI Inbox is being gradually rolled out and is currently in beta testing.
