Ecologists have recorded elevated levels of suspended substances and ammonium nitrogen in areas with significant algae accumulation in the Black Sea.

This was reported by the press service of the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.

Experts explain that the decomposition of algae in coastal areas leads to exceeding permissible concentrations along the beaches. To prevent further deterioration of the situation, the Inspection sent a letter to the Odessa City Council requesting the cleaning of the coastline from accumulated algae. The Inspection also appealed to the Ukrainian Scientific Center for Marine Ecology and the State Consumer Service in the Odessa region to conduct additional studies of the seawater. The inspection will cover microbiological and sanitary-chemical indicators, as well as hydrobiological and bacteriological analyses of water in areas of mass algae accumulation.
