The municipality of Odessa, in collaboration with the Government of Japan, UNDP, and international partners from Norway and Sweden, is implementing a project to install gas engine generators with a total capacity of about 30 MW.
This initiative is part of a decentralization strategy aimed at improving the energy resilience and security of the local community.
The first cogeneration unit has been connected and is already powering one of the city's boilers.
«This unit can produce 3.3 MW per hour. The boiler requires about half of that power, and we plan to redirect the surplus to support other critical infrastructure,» commented the Mayor of Odessa.
Currently, work is underway to connect three more cogeneration units that have already arrived in the city. In total, UNDP has commissioned 9 units for Odessa with a combined capacity of 30 MW.
Additionally, 7 cogeneration units from the German Agency GIZ have arrived in Odessa. All of them will be installed at district heating plants, with two already in the process of being connected. Components for connecting the other five will arrive shortly.
