The Odesa National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet has unveiled a premiere of a new interpretation of the opera “Zaporozhets beyond the Danube”, showcasing modern directing and original costumes.

Details of the new production

This version employs minimalist sets and cutting-edge lighting effects. Interactive elements transport the audience from the late 18th century to the present day.

The costumes blend traditional Ukrainian elements with avant-garde silhouettes. Designers have moved away from classic trousers and embroidered shirts, creating contemporary outfits that reflect the spirit of the Cossack era.

The choreography maintains the energy of folk dances while avoiding clichéd movements. Original dance pieces combine elements of modern ballet with ethnic art, highlighting the patriotic themes of the opera.

The project aims to convey the story of the Cossacks and their fight for freedom to the modern audience, preserving the authenticity of the original. The production emphasizes the values of independence and courage, underlining their relevance in today's world.
