Students from Lyceum No. 56 in Odesa had the opportunity to connect via Zoom with biologists working at the Ukrainian Antarctic station «Akademik Vernadskyi». This meeting opened new scientific horizons for the children, allowing them to learn about life on the icy continent. According to reports from Odesa's Lyceum No. 56, participants from the 30th Ukrainian Antarctic expedition joined the call. They connected with biologist Yelyzaveta Safonova, a native of Odesa, and her colleague Taras Peretyatko.
The polar scientists shared insights about the unique flora and fauna of the Argentine Islands, discussed the scientific research they conduct in Antarctica, and emphasized the critical issue of climate change in the region.
Students were particularly intrigued by the everyday life of polar researchers.
They learned about how scientists live at the station, the challenges they face daily, and the discoveries made during their expeditions.
The meeting concluded with an active «question-and-answer» session. Students received heartfelt responses to their inquiries and felt a sense of pride for the Ukrainian scientists representing the country in one of the most remote corners of the planet.
