The Ministry of Digital Transformation, in collaboration with the mobile operator "Kyivstar", is developing a robust Ukrainian language model based on Google’s Gemma 3 technology. Mykhailo Fedorov announced this during a press conference.
According to Fedorov, the primary goal of the initiative is to position Ukraine among the top three leaders globally in artificial intelligence by 2030. Establishing a domestic language model is a crucial step towards this aim.
The choice of Gemma 3 from Google is justified by several advantages:
- optimal balance of performance and resources;
- support for the Ukrainian language;
- capability to handle both text and images;
- foundation for the best Ukrainian language models.
The creation of a Ukrainian LLM is vital for the strategic development of AI in Ukraine. The quality and security of our public services depend on the efficacy of this language model. The next step will be to train Gemma on Ukrainian texts and test the model through benchmarks.
